Farage ignored on safety threats, deputy says after terror plot charge

Threats against Nigel Farage heighten security concerns

Anti-immigration Reform UK party leader Nigel Farage has raised alarms about threats to his safety, following the arrest of a suspect linked to the killing of former British politician Ann Widdecombe, who is now accused of plotting a terror attack against Farage, reports BritPanorama.

Richard Tice, Farage’s deputy, indicated that this recent development signals a serious wake-up call. He noted that Farage has expressed concerns regarding his security multiple times over the years, stating, “What’s particularly upsetting for those of us in and around him is sometimes he’s not being believed, not being listened to,” during an interview with the BBC.

Joshua Kerry, 28, has been charged with preparation of terrorist acts, which includes threats against Farage, according to the Crown Prosecution Service. While specific details surrounding the charge remain undisclosed, counterterrorism authorities had previously reopened an investigation into a firebomb incident at Farage’s home in south London.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has voiced her support for Farage and his family, acknowledging the gravity of the new charges. “I know the new charges made today will be extremely concerning,” she stated on X. Mahmood emphasized, “Let no one make any mistake: an attack on anyone in politics is an attack on us all.” She has also committed to enhancing security measures for politicians when Parliament reconvenes on October 12.

Kerry had also been charged with murder in connection with the beating death of Widdecombe on July 8. The 78-year-old Widdecombe, a prominent figure in the Reform Party, served as a Conservative member of Parliament known for her conservative social views against abortion and the expansion of LGBTQ+ rights.

The circumstances surrounding Widdecombe’s death have rekindled concerns over political security in the UK, particularly after previous incidents that resulted in the murder of Labour MP Jo Cox in 2016 by a far-right extremist, and Conservative MP David Amess in 2021 at the hands of an individual influenced by the Islamic State.

Tice confirmed that the party has sought high-level meetings with the government to address these security issues, which have led authorities to adopt a more serious approach in dealing with perceived threats. Kerry is scheduled to appear in Westminster Magistrates’ Court on the new charges on Wednesday.
