Ed Miliband shakes hands with Iran’s foreign minister, drawing condemnation
Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband has faced significant backlash after shaking hands with Iran’s chief diplomat, Abbas Araghchi, during a meeting at the United Nations General Assembly. Jewish organizations and exiled Iranian groups have labeled the encounter with Araghchi, who has been a vocal supporter of the Iranian regime, as a “staged move” that legitimizes a regime responsible for severe oppression, including the reported murder of 30,000 anti-government protesters this year.
Vahid Beheshti, leader of the anti-regime group Iran Front, expressed outrage, saying, “Ed Miliband shaking hands with Abbas Araghchi is a deeply shameful and disturbing spectacle.” He emphasized that “his blood-stained hands should never have been met with the diplomatic warmth of a British handshake,” adding that such acts could send a damaging message to the Iranian populace.
In a marked contrast to the warmth shown to Araghchi, Miliband was reportedly accused of snubbing Israeli officials at the same assembly. Shadow Foreign Office minister Alicia Kearns characterized the handshake with Araghchi as a “propaganda win for the Iranians,” questioning Miliband’s judgment in engaging with a regime known for numerous hostile actions against the UK, including cyber-attacks and threats to the Jewish community.
A spokesperson from the Foreign Office stated that Miliband reiterated the UK’s steadfast commitment to combating threats from groups linked to Iran, particularly regarding security concerns for the British Jewish community.
