Trump nominates Dr. Erica Schwartz to lead CDC
President Donald Trump has nominated former Coast Guard officer and public health official Dr. Erica Schwartz to head the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, reports BritPanorama.
The announcement came on Thursday, filling the leadership vacuum at the agency that has been without a permanent director since the ouster of Dr. Susan Monarez last August.
Trump expressed his support on Truth Social, stating, “It is my Honor to nominate the incredibly talented Dr. Erica Schwartz. She is a STAR!”
Dr. Schwartz previously served as deputy surgeon general during Trump’s first term and has spent 24 years in the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, achieving the rank of rear admiral in the Coast Guard. She holds a medical degree from Brown University and a law degree from the University of Maryland.
This latest nomination follows significant scrutiny and challenges faced by the CDC during the COVID-19 pandemic, underscoring the critical role of its leadership moving forward.
