Andrew Flintoff steps down as England Lions head coach
Andrew Flintoff has stepped down from his role as head coach of the England Lions after almost two years in the position, reports BritPanorama.
The former England captain has been involved in various roles within the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) but has now left the organisation altogether. His tenure included a significant contribution to the development of young cricketers during a transformative period for the team.
Flintoff, 48, is set to join Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League (BBL), where he will take on a coaching role. His decision to leave the Lions comes as he prepares for this new chapter in his career.
Commenting on his departure, Flintoff said: “Unfortunately, I’ve made the decision to step away from my role with the Lions. Not only have I enjoyed my time having the opportunity to work with the best young cricketers in the country, but I have taken great pride in seeing them develop.” He expressed gratitude towards his colleagues, especially Ed Barney and Rob Key, for their support during his time with the Lions.
In his 23-month tenure as head coach, Flintoff had already been part of the backroom staff during the 2024 T20 World Cup and was intent on continuing to foster young talent in English cricket. However, he will miss the concluding matches of the England Lions’ tour of South Africa due to his upcoming BBL commitments.
Ed Barney, the ECB’s men’s performance director, praised Flintoff’s influence, stating: “Fred has helped to transform the Lions environment into a programme that has had a major impact on young players. By creating an environment that both supports and pushes excellence at all times, he has helped bring forward a new generation of young players.”
