The coronagraph, a highly sensitive space instrument, is set to launch aboard NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, which could happen as soon as this weekend, reports BritPanorama.

This instrument has been developed to investigate dark matter, dark energy, and potentially habitable planets outside our solar system. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman highlighted the significance of the Roman telescope when it was unveiled in April, stating that it will enhance our understanding of the universe’s structure.

During the coronagraph’s assembly phase, the team utilized virtual reality technology to allow visitors to explore the instrument’s inner workings. This innovative approach is part of the meticulous process required for constructing complex astronomical tools, as contamination is a major concern.

The coronagraph, affectionately referred to as “starglasses,” employs flexible mirrors designed to adapt in real time, enabling it to block out the intense starlight that hinders observations of faint celestial bodies. If successful, it could allow scientists to discover distant Earth-like planets capable of supporting life.

As NASA’s newest flagship observatory, Roman is positioned to address major unresolved questions about the cosmos. This includes the pursuit of knowledge surrounding dark energy and dark matter.
