Joe Cordina appears in court following altercation
Former boxing world champion Joe Cordina appeared at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court in connection with an altercation involving a fellow motorist, reports BritPanorama.
Cordina testified that he noticed O’Brien staring at him while refueling his car and attempted to engage him, but the 33-year-old insisted he should come over instead. The situation escalated, with Cordina claiming O’Brien “barged” into him, prompting the boxer to act in self-defence. “He had his hands in his pockets, I don’t know what people carry on them these days,” Cordina explained.
Cordina expressed concern about the potential repercussions of a criminal conviction, indicating that it would effectively lead to the loss of his boxing licence, which would have a “100 per cent” impact on his daily life. Throughout the trial, Cordina maintained his innocence, denying any wrongdoing.
The case highlights the complexities that athletes face in navigating both competitive and personal spheres, an intersection where reputations can hinge on a single incident.
