Margaret Hamilton, pioneering software engineer, passes away at 90

Margaret Hamilton, the groundbreaking researcher who helped create the field of software engineering and whose code contributed to NASA’s Apollo missions, has died at the age of 90, reports BritPanorama.

Hamilton’s passing was confirmed by her former employer, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), in a statement from the department of aeronautics and astronautics. The cause of her death has not been disclosed.

During her tenure at MIT, which began in 1959 and lasted until the mid-1970s, Hamilton managed the Software Engineering Division of the MIT Instrumentation Laboratory. Under her leadership, the division secured a contract with NASA in 1961, culminating in the development of the software that guided the Apollo missions.

Beyond her significant contributions to aerospace, Hamilton is also recognized as a founder of software engineering itself—a term she coined—as she helped establish it as a professional field. “To say Margaret Hamilton was a pioneer — to say she was ahead of her time — would be a dramatic understatement,” stated Olivier de Weck, the Apollo Program Professor and interim head of the MIT Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He highlighted her unique role in developing advanced code during the early days of a rapidly evolving discipline.

In recognition of her contributions to science and technology, Hamilton was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama in 2016, solidifying her legacy in the annals of space exploration.

Her passing marks the end of an era in software engineering, a field that has transformed significantly since her pioneering days.
