Penny Mordaunt returns to Conservative candidates list amid policy shifts

Conservative MP Dame Penny Mordaunt has been reinstated as a candidate for her party, aligning herself with new right-wing policies under party leader Kemi Badenoch, reports BritPanorama.

The announcement has prompted questions regarding the implications of her shift in stance, particularly her support for abandoning the UK’s commitment to net zero and withdrawing from the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). This move reflects a broader trend within the party, as members reassess their positions to align with the current leadership’s priorities.

On BBC’s Sunday morning political show hosted by Laura Kuenssberg, Dame Penny stated, “The nation will be pleased to know I have passed my assessment with the candidates board.” She publicly expressed eagerness to rejoin the parliamentary ranks, stating if she were not selected, she would still support the party from “the stands.”

When questioned about her policy alignment, she maintained, “I am very happy with the party position as it is on all those issues,” further noting that she believes it is right for Badenoch to require candidates to adhere to the party manifesto.

However, in a candid moment, Dame Penny admitted, “Have I agreed 100 per cent with every policy there has been? No, I haven’t.” Her comments hint at an uncomfortable truth for many party members who may feel pressured to conform to the party’s shifting ideological landscape.

Notably, former foreign secretary Sir James Cleverly, who once supported net zero and ECHR membership, has also indicated a change of heart in light of evolving circumstances. He remarked, “The economic outlook has changed dramatically… it seems crazy to say we are not going to make use of our own hydrocarbon reserves.”

His recent shift underlines how external factors, including geopolitical tensions and energy crises, are reshaping Conservative policy discussions. Cloverly previously faced backlash within the party regarding his views, reflecting the high stakes for candidates vying for party support in the current political environment.

As the party recalibrates its positions, observers remain cautious about the sincerity of these changes. With Badenoch asserting her control over policy direction, the question arises whether Mordaunt and Cleverly would maintain these views should the party’s leadership shift again. A history of political expediency within the party raises doubts about their long-term commitment to these newfound stances.

The evolving dynamics within the Conservative Party illustrate a pragmatic, if not contentious, approach to policymaking as members navigate the challenges of modern British politics.
