Britain develops offensive space capabilities amid global arms race
Britain is intensifying its efforts to counter threats from adversaries in space, as new revelations from the UK’s Space Strategy highlight a focus on developing “offensive capabilities.” The specifics of these capabilities remain classified, but the move comes in response to rising military activities from Russia and China, reports BritPanorama.
The new strategy asserts that the UK must ensure adversaries cannot operate freely in space. Experts suggest that potential technologies could include electronic jamming, cyber attacks, and directed-energy weapons designed to impair enemy satellite functions.
In parallel, the United States recently acknowledged the presence of “space control weapons” already deployed in orbit, highlighting a shared concern over the evolving military landscape in space. US Air Force Secretary Troy Meink did not disclose exact details regarding these capabilities amid increasing anxiety over Russian and Chinese space activities.
Former Armed Forces minister Al Carns remarked on the gravity of the situation, stating, “Space is the next frontier of war fighting.” He emphasized that while the UK possesses strategic interests, it must acknowledge its status as a middle power in this escalating space arms race.
Both Russia and China are known to have tested weaponry capable of targeting satellites directly. Notably, Russia has engaged in cyber attacks and jamming techniques during its ongoing military operations in Ukraine. Dr. Mark Hilborne from King’s College London stated that effective UK capabilities would likely focus on offensive cyber warfare and electronic jamming as immediate responses to these threats.
Hilborne also warned about the direct implications of attacks on essential satellite services, explaining that disruptions could severely impact everyday life in the UK, affecting banking systems, transportation, and military operations reliant on GPS technology.
Juliana Suess, a space warfare expert at RUSI, articulated the concerns surrounding Russian and Chinese ventures in space, describing current disruptions to satellite navigation as routine, particularly in regions like Ukraine and the Baltics. She noted that attempts to disrupt satellite services often occur in the early stages of conflict, underscoring a serious threat to capabilities relied upon globally.
Furthermore, Luke de Pulford from the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China cautioned that Beijing’s significant investment in counter-space technologies is not merely for research but to prepare for offensive actions against adversaries. He criticized the UK’s response as being behind the curve in recognizing the looming threat.
The UK’s recently published Space Strategy outlines ambitions for “significantly expanded military capabilities in space” by 2035, although authorities remain tight-lipped on specific future capabilities due to security concerns. The government is investing approximately £880 million over four years towards intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and space control to enhance national security.
An MoD spokesperson emphasized the critical nature of space for national security and prosperity, advocating that cooperation with allies is essential amid rising threats in a complex operational environment. The new space strategy, supported by £7.8 billion of investment, aims to fortify Britain’s defences and safeguard essential space operations.
