Bernie Ecclestone arrested for carrying a shotgun at Portuguese aerodrome

Former F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone has reportedly been arrested for illegally carrying a shotgun at a Portuguese aerodrome, reports BritPanorama.

Ecclestone, 95, was apprehended at Tires Aerodrome, located near Lisbon, after arriving in his private jet. The weapon he was carrying has been identified locally as a shotgun.

This is not the first legal issue for Ecclestone; he was previously arrested in May 2022 in Brazil for carrying a gun while boarding a private aircraft. At that time, Ecclestone acknowledged owning the firearm but claimed he was unaware it was in his luggage.

After paying bail, he was allowed to continue his travels to Switzerland, downplaying the incident as a “silly, tiny little incident.” Despite the official confirmation from Brazil’s public security office regarding an arrest for firearm possession at Campinas Airport, Ecclestone asserted that he was not formally arrested. He later explained that he had purchased the gun from a former F1 mechanic many years ago.

Such incidents further complicate Ecclestone’s legacy in the motorsport world, showcasing not just the tension between celebrity and legality but also raising questions about the responsibilities of public figures. His humorous yet cavalier attitude towards firearms may resonate differently with fans and critics alike, illustrating the delicate balance between personal freedom and public scrutiny.
