Mike Dean has issued a statement following an intense wave of backlash after the former Premier League referee said he would play “secret games” while officiating fixtures, reports BritPanorama.
The 61-year-old, who refereed for 22 years in England’s top flight, made these comments on the podcast Jamie Vardy’s Having a Party, igniting widespread outrage among football supporters. Many deemed his behaviour as “disgusting,” “unprofessional,” and “diabolical.”
In response, Dean defended his refereeing career through a social media statement. He emphasised his commitment to the Laws of the Game and expressed that his approach was always to foster the flow of the game. “Whenever possible, I preferred to apply a high threshold for contact, which the players liked,” he noted.
His remarks included anecdotes about how he used to delay blowing his whistle just for fun during matches. Dean mentioned that he could go “20 to 25 minutes without blowing a whistle a few times” before the introduction of VAR, which he described as a nostalgic yet curious practice.

Dean’s career spanned more than two decades, during which he took charge of 553 Premier League fixtures between 2000 and 2022, marking him as one of the most recognisable figures in English football.
