Aryna Sabalenka swept past qualifier Polina Iatcenko 6-1, 6-1 in under an hour on Arthur Ashe Stadium on Wednesday evening, but the fireworks came after the match rather than during it, reports BritPanorama.
The world No 1 became embroiled in a testy confrontation with a journalist during her post-match press conference, taking exception to what she perceived as an insinuation that she had spent the week before the US Open socialising rather than preparing.
The Belarusian, who is chasing a third consecutive title at Flushing Meadows, branded the assembled media “a joke” and told the reporter to “think before you say stuff.”
Triggered by a question about her mood, the journalist remarked that the previous week had involved “lots of parties and fun and stuff like that.” Sabalenka responded sharply: “You guys are, like, a joke. Parties, fun. Like, why would you even say that? Why would you even think about that? What kind of question is that?”
The 28-year-old, boasting over 5.6 million Instagram followers, asserted that the question carried an unfair implication. “Just because I posted, like, some activities with brands, and you think that I’ve been partying, not training? The question, like, what is that?” Sabalenka asked.
Traditionally, the week preceding the US Open sees top players fulfil various commercial and promotional commitments. The reporter tried to clarify, insisting they were referencing her busy schedule rather than implying she had been enjoying herself at parties. “I’m not saying you go to the parties,” the journalist protested, only to be met with Sabalenka’s retort: “You literally said that. Next question.”
For clarity, the reporter addressed the wider press room, stating, “For everyone who is unclear, I’m not suggesting that Aryna is having fun at these parties. I’m saying that she makes a lot of appearances and there’s a lot to do and lots of events.”
Unmoved, Sabalenka responded, “Move on.” A follow-up inquiry about whether she was feeling “serious and combative” was met with more disdain. “Oh, yeah, I wasn’t serious before that. Next question. Think before you say stuff,” she snapped.
This incident marked the second uncomfortable media exchange for the four-time Grand Slam champion since the tournament began. Earlier in the week, following her straight-sets victory over Camila Osorio, Sabalenka had another prickly encounter with a reporter.
The scrutiny surrounding her performance heading into the tournament had already raised eyebrows, particularly after early exits at both the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open in recent months. Yet, Sabalenka has appeared dominant at Flushing Meadows, extending her winning streak to 17 matches. She is set to face Uzbekistan’s Kamilla Rakhimova in the third round on Friday.
