Zverev claims second US Open title, asserts dominance in men’s tennis
Alexander Zverev has admitted he is probably the best tennis player in the world “right now” after capturing his second Grand Slam title of 2026 at the US Open, reports BritPanorama.
The German defeated home favourite Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6, 5-7, 6-2 in the final at Flushing Meadows, doubling his career tally of major trophies and strengthening his push to become world No 1.
Zverev is the only man to have won two Grand Slams this year, with Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz claiming one apiece.
His latest triumph inevitably prompted questions regarding whether he should now be regarded as the leading player in the world. Zverev offered a candid assessment of the situation, acknowledging that injuries suffered by Sinner and Alcaraz have altered the competitive landscape. “I don’t know how to answer that,” he stated. “With Jannik Sinner being injured, Carlos Alcaraz coming back from injury after four months, right now, this moment, probably yes.”
Both Sinner and Alcaraz were absent from the US Open, with Sinner sidelined due to injury and Alcaraz returning from a lengthy spell out. Their absence provided a clearer path for Zverev, who did not face either rival during his successful campaign.
Critics have questioned whether Zverev would have secured his titles had Sinner and Alcaraz been fit and competing at their best. Zverev acknowledged this argument, conceding that Sinner would likely still have the edge in a fully fit competition. “Four or five months ago, when both of them were healthy, I wasn’t [the best player in the world],” he reflected, hinting at his previous struggles against Sinner.
“If everyone is healthy, I think Jannik is still ahead. It’s as simple as that,” he elaborated. This acknowledgment is supported by history; Zverev has yet to win against Sinner in their meetings during 2026, losing all five matches and managing just one set against him.
Nevertheless, Zverev’s recent successes have significantly impacted the ATP rankings. His US Open victory has placed him closer to Sinner’s lead in points and further enhanced his position in the Live ATP Race to Turin, where he currently leads, positioning him favourably to end the year as world No 1.
Both Zverev and Sinner are set to compete at the ATP Finals, where the contest for the top ranking could potentially reach its climax. Zverev is now preparing for the China Open, commencing on September 28, as he aims to build on his latest triumph in pursuit of further successes.
