Katie Boulter suffers devastating defeat at US Open
Katie Boulter endured the most humiliating Grand Slam defeat of her career on Wednesday, swept aside 6-1, 6-0 by Czech seventh seed Karolina Muchova in the US Open second round, reports BritPanorama.
The match lasted a mere 58 minutes, during which Boulter, the British number one, failed to claim even a single game against Muchova, this year’s Wimbledon finalist. Dominated by her opponent’s clinical drop shots and sharp groundstrokes, the match marked Boulter’s most comprehensive loss across 57 major tournament appearances.
Boulter struggled significantly throughout the match, failing to hold serve even once and being broken on all seven occasions she faced break point. The 30-year-old managed only four winners while conceding 22 unforced errors, an imbalance that starkly illustrated the disparity in performance between the two players.
The contest, originally set for Court 5, was relocated to Louis Armstrong Stadium due to heavy rainfall in New York. Instead of gaining an advantage from the larger venue, Boulter found the change unsettling. “I struggled with the conditions,” she stated. “I struggled with the roof, the noise, I let things distract me. Ultimately, it was a bad day at the office – times two.”
She noted that the atmosphere contributed to her discomfort, saying, “You really want atmosphere, and you want to play in a buzz and an energy. But today, I really let it get to me more than usual.” Boulter’s serving was particularly disappointing; she struck eight double faults and failed to land a single ace, winning only 33 per cent of points behind her first delivery. Muchova, in contrast, recorded 14 winners against just nine unforced errors.
Former world number five Daniela Hantuchova expressed a clear perspective on the match, asserting, “I would be really humbled [if I was Boulter], I would sit down with my team and say ‘OK, we need to change something big time’.” Hantuchova specified the serve as a primary concern, advising Boulter to focus on her rhythm and technique.
This dismal performance capped a bleak Grand Slam campaign for Boulter in 2026, during which she secured only two victories across all four majors, both against inexperienced American qualifiers. Since exiting Wimbledon, she has only triumphed in two of her last six matches. Her close friend Laura Robson commented succinctly on the match, noting, “Not a great day at the office. She’ll want to get off this court quickly.”
Off the court, Boulter recently celebrated her marriage to Australian world number seven Alex de Minaur in July. Following her performance at Flushing Meadows, Boulter will turn her attention to representing Britain in the Billie Jean King Cup Playoffs in China shortly.
Francesca Jones provided a silver lining for British tennis, battling past Poland’s Magda Linette 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 in a rain-disrupted first-round encounter. Jones, who resumed play after a halted first set, expressed gratitude for her victory, stating, “To be honest, I was probably a little bit lucky.” This was only her second triumph at Grand Slam level, offering a contrasting narrative amidst the disappointment for Boulter.
