Ralf Schumacher pays tribute to Michael ahead of Italian Grand Prix
Ralf Schumacher has paid tribute to his brother, Formula One legend Michael Schumacher, as the Italian Grand Prix approaches, marking 30 years since Michael’s debut with Ferrari and 20 years since his victory in 2006, reports BritPanorama.
Revisiting footage of his brother’s achievements in Italy, Ralf expressed a deep sense of emotion and reflected on Michael’s remarkable legacy within the sport. “It is very emotional. You tend to forget things because time moves on; Formula One moves on so rapidly; everything happens so fast,” he told Sky Sports.
He recalled the powerful imagery evoked by rewatching Michael’s race highlights. “Seeing all those pictures again reminds you of what he achieved in his time. And he was one of the biggest of all time,” Ralf added. He also praised his brother’s ability to excel under immense pressure, noting that Michael gained strength from it.
Ralf highlighted the unique environment at Ferrari, stating, “At Ferrari, as you see also today, for all the drivers, even for the team principals, it’s full of pressure because of the emotions of Ferrari fans and all of Italy. This brand is amazing, isn’t it? I’ve never experienced anything else like that in Formula One.”
The two brothers competed against each other in Formula One for over a decade, from 1997 to 2007. Ralf, looking back, shared that he always saw Michael as a role model, saying, “I was always asked: ‘Who was your personal idol?’ And I never had one except my brother. It’s strange to say that because we are only six and a half years apart, but all I ever knew about racing, he taught me.”
Ralf further articulated how Michael’s approach to racing focused on teamwork. “He was one of the first drivers, and that’s what’s so important if you want to achieve something: give 100 per cent and believe in yourself, but don’t forget the other people around you.” He recognized that Michael’s success was largely due to his ability to foster a strong team environment.
Reflecting specifically on Michael’s victory for Ferrari 30 years ago, Ralf described the intense pressure his brother faced during that period. He recounted a conversation where Michael deliberated between opportunities with McLaren and Ferrari, acknowledging the risks involved. “It was a very tough year for all of them because the expectations were high. And I remember when Michael and I were sitting in the kitchen, and he was asking me: ‘What would you do? I have the chance to go to McLaren, but there’s Ron Dennis. So I’m not sure about that,” he said.
As Ralf looks back on Michael’s illustrious career and their shared experiences, it serves as a poignant reminder of their deep bond and the enduring legacy left in the world of motorsport.
