Keir Starmer resigns as MP to focus on international affairs
Former prime minister Sir Keir Starmer has resigned as an MP, stating he felt it was the “right time” to step down and concentrate on work in international affairs, reports BritPanorama.
Starmer confirmed his departure from his Holborn and St Pancras constituency in an interview with the Camden New Journal. His resignation comes following a period of reflection over the summer regarding his future.
In his statement published on X, he expressed pride in his tenure, which began 11 years ago, and emphasized the importance of shifting his focus to global issues such as defense, security, trade, and technology in a rapidly changing world.
Starmer acknowledged the achievements during his time in office, including efforts in affordable housing, education, and youth safety initiatives. He stated, “I look back with pride on what my constituency team and I have delivered in Holborn and St Pancras since 2015 and I thank all those who I was privileged to work with on so many issues of local concern.”
He highlighted the significance of his constituency team’s support throughout his political journey, particularly during his leadership of the Labour Party, which he led from a position of crisis to an electoral victory in 2024.
Starmer’s resignation will initiate a process to appoint his successor ahead of a by-election, and he extended his full support to the incoming Labour candidate and the current government.
