Russia preparing to launch ‘massive strikes’ on Ukraine’s energy facilities
Russia’s defence ministry has warned that it has “begun preparations to launch massive strikes against Ukraine’s energy facilities,” in a post on Telegram. The ministry described the move as retribution for Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy facilities, reports BritPanorama.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that this offensive represents an “appropriate response” to Ukraine’s alleged “path of escalation” and claimed that Moscow has been “fairly systematic” in targeting Kyiv’s military infrastructure. This escalation comes on the heels of Ukraine’s drone campaign aimed at critical sites within Russia.
Ukraine has targeted online retailers such as Wildberries and Ozon, which it accuses of supporting the Russian military. The companies have denied these allegations, insisting that they operate within legal frameworks. Concurrently, conflicts have recently intensified with more widespread military actions from both sides.
In a separate development, CIA director John Ratcliffe is said to have proposed a trilateral meeting involving Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and former U.S. President Donald Trump during his unannounced visit to Moscow. The purpose of this meeting remains unclear.
Efforts for dialogue between Ukraine and Russia have largely stalled since February, paralyzed further by a U.S. military operation in Iran. Recent violence has led to significant casualties, with at least 38 reported dead in a Russian attack deemed the deadliest strike in Ukraine this year. This assault targeted an ammunition depot in the Kyiv region, creating widespread destruction.
Zelensky has announced that legal actions are underway concerning charges of official negligence related to these attacks, which hit civilian areas and infrastructure.
A NATO official has remarked that, while Russia is ramping up hybrid tactics in Europe, the alliance currently perceives no imminent threat of a direct assault. As part of ongoing vigilance, NATO continues to support Ukraine and monitor the situation closely.
The ramifications of these developments suggest a continued escalation of hostilities between Ukraine and Russia, with potential consequences for regional stability in Europe.
