Back in October 2024, the 55-year-old Irishman made a bold declaration during an episode of The Overlap on Tour. “In the next couple of years, I reckon I will be moving abroad… putting it out there,” Keane said, floating Switzerland as his destination of choice and calling the country beautiful.

Relocating to Switzerland would make his current role significantly more complex. Hopping over to a studio for weekend Premier League coverage is quite different when he’s based in the UK compared to living on the continent and facing a lengthy journey each way. Keane himself has acknowledged that this chapter of his life won’t last indefinitely. He’s been a familiar fixture on Sky Sports for years, especially around United fixtures, but the logistics of commuting from central Europe would complicate regular appearances.
It’s notable that Keane hasn’t explicitly stated he’s done with punditry, but the practical reality of a Swiss move would likely compel difficult decisions regarding how long he can maintain his presence on matchdays. Furthermore, the job’s demands have begun to wear him down. Keane has been candid about the downsides of life as a high-profile pundit, including the chaos of reaching venues and unwanted attention from supporters.
Things took a particularly ugly turn in June 2024, when a man was convicted of headbutting Keane while he was working at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium. The incident clearly left an impression. “I love football, but the hassle of matches, getting to games, and the hassle of fans,” he told Stick to Football in 2024. “I was in court a few months ago with somebody headbutting me, do you think I enjoy that side of it? Absolutely not.”
He expressed his long-term plans plainly: “Being a pundit in 10 years, not.” Keane isn’t the only prominent Sky Sports figure contemplating a shift. His colleague Micah Richards has also outlined his potential exit from broadcasting, albeit with a longer timeline.
“I’ll be out of all this by the time I turn 46,” the former Manchester City defender told The Telegraph in July. “You won’t see me on any mainstream media beyond the 2034 World Cup. That will be the last time I am on the BBC or Sky or CBS. I’ve told them all this and they think I’m joking. I’m not.”
Richards seeks to dedicate his efforts to grassroots initiatives, particularly in his home community of Chapeltown in Leeds, which he describes as brimming with talent but lacking in opportunities. “I want to make a difference to people’s lives at a grassroots level — to help those who need it most, especially young people,” he stated.
