Max Verstappen signs long-term contract extension with Red Bull
Max Verstappen has secured his future with Red Bull by signing a contract extension that will keep the four-time world champion with the Milton Keynes-based team until the end of 2030, reports BritPanorama.
The announcement came during a press event at Zandvoort, coinciding with the Dutch Grand Prix weekend and putting an end to speculation regarding a potential move to rival teams, particularly Mercedes and McLaren.
George Russell of Mercedes responded calmly to Verstappen’s decision, which alleviates concerns about his own position within the team. The prospect of Verstappen joining Mercedes had raised questions about whether Russell might be sidelined. However, he insisted that his seat was never genuinely at risk.
“It’s only really a topic for us when you guys in the press want to ask these questions and understand what is going on,” Russell stated, emphasising that the narratives outside the team often do not reflect reality within the organisation.
Russell remarked that the ongoing discussions surrounding Verstappen’s contract were more visible than conversations Red Bull might be having with other teams, such as McLaren or Ferrari. He maintained, “My seat never felt under threat, and I felt 100 per cent security with Toto and the team. That obviously now continues.”
Looking ahead, Russell is focused on Mercedes’ performance as the season progresses. Although he currently trails teammate Kimi Antonelli in the drivers’ standings, he has ruled out the possibility of team orders being implemented, stating, “Not even a consideration at the moment. It’s not even halfway through and we need to just keep pushing on as a team.”
Russell also acknowledged the competitive landscape, conceding that Mercedes is behind in development compared to rivals who have already introduced significant updates. He expressed optimism about Mercedes’ forthcoming developments and hopes to recapture the form they exhibited earlier in the campaign.
Lando Norris, driving for McLaren, reacted with a more relaxed attitude towards Verstappen’s decision, suggesting the seat in question would have belonged to teammate Oscar Piastri rather than himself had a move occurred. Norris welcomed the idea of partnering with a driver of Verstappen’s caliber in the future but confirmed that Piastri remains his current teammate.
In this dynamic atmosphere, tensions and expectations continue to shape narratives both within and beyond the circuit. The world of Formula 1 thrives on such competitive rivalries, and while contracts secure futures, the race remains unpredictable and fiercely contested.
