Wayne Rooney reveals summer plastic surgery for nose repair

Wayne Rooney disclosed that he underwent plastic surgery this summer to address long-standing damage caused by two broken noses during his football career, reports BritPanorama.

The former Manchester United and England striker shared details about the procedure on the inaugural episode of the new Stick to United podcast alongside Mark Goldbridge. At 40 years old, Rooney was still in recovery at the time of recording, noting that he had two plastic tubes inserted into his nose as part of the healing process.

He expressed relief at avoiding significant bruising around his eyes but admitted that the aftermath of the surgery was uncomfortable. “It’s actually really lucky I’ve got no black eyes, but I’ve still got two plastic tubes up my nose, which are coming out very soon,” Rooney stated. “I can’t wait for them to come out. They’ve cut here (under my nostrils)… So, that’s all stitched – a little bit uncomfortable.”

Reflecting on his injuries, Rooney traced the origins of the damage back to his illustrious career, with the first break occurring during an FA Cup match against Preston in February 2015. He humorously recalled his role in winning a penalty that led to a goal, referencing “a bit of a dive” while acknowledging that he suffered the injury during the same match where former teammate Marouane Fellaini also broke his nose.

Rooney continued to play through injuries, suffering further damage after his transfer to Major League Soccer with DC United, where he broke his nose again in 2018 during a collision with Niki Jackson. “That was a bad one then,” he remarked. Though surgery was necessary, he postponed it until this summer, after fulfilling his commitments surrounding the World Cup.

Having finally addressed the issue, Rooney has signified a notable chapter in his post-football journey, revealing the physical toll of an extraordinary career now met with personal reflection. It serves as a reminder that even the most iconic athletes must confront the consequences of their actions on the pitch long after the final whistle has blown.
