Arsenal pursues Ezri Konsa amid defensive woes
Arsenal are reportedly growing increasingly confident of signing Ezri Konsa as Mikel Arteta looks to solve a defensive headache before the new Premier League season, reports BritPanorama.
The reigning champions have intensified their pursuit of the Aston Villa defender, who has been a longstanding target over the summer. Konsa’s versatility is particularly appealing; he can function as both a centre-back and a right-sided defender.
The 28-year-old, who possesses extensive Premier League experience, has become a critical focus following injury challenges at the Emirates Stadium. William Saliba is anticipated to be sidelined for several months due to a back injury, further complicating Arsenal’s defensive options.
Meanwhile, Jurrien Timber has been grappling with a persistent groin issue since March, missing out on the World Cup and raising concerns about his fitness as the domestic campaign approaches. Currently, Ben White and Cristhian Mosquera stand as Arteta’s only established senior options on the right side of defence, with promising 16-year-old Marli Salmon providing additional cover, albeit with the recognition that the teenager should not shoulder too much responsibility too soon.
Arteta confirmed last weekend that the club had been actively working “for weeks” to bolster their defensive line. With the situation intensifying, Arsenal’s focus is firmly on Konsa, and there is rising optimism that an agreement with Villa can be reached.
Having recently returned to training after his World Cup stint with England, Konsa is keen on a move to the Emirates Stadium. However, Arsenal may need to match a hefty price tag, as Villa value the defender at approximately £60 million, and negotiations regarding his future are ongoing.
Konsa, who joined Villa from Brentford for £12 million in 2019, has solidified his position as a key player at Villa Park, making over 280 appearances and contributing significantly to their solid defensive record, including helping the team lift the Europa League last season.
The potential sale of Konsa would further contribute to a summer of transformation at Villa Park, following the departures of Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, and Lucas Digne, with uncertainty still looming over the futures of Ollie Watkins and Emiliano Martinez.
As Arsenal navigates these turbulent waters, the quest for a solid defensive framework becomes not just a matter of personnel, but a symbol of their ambitions this coming season.
