Marcus Rashford opts not to reclaim No 10 shirt at Manchester United

Marcus Rashford has reportedly decided he will not ask Manchester United to hand back his famous No 10 shirt following his return to Old Trafford, reports BritPanorama.

The England international is back at his boyhood club after spending the past 18 months away from United on loan spells with Aston Villa and Barcelona. Barcelona opted against making Rashford’s temporary switch a permanent transfer, leaving the 28-year-old back in Manchester to revive his career under Michael Carrick.

One potential source of awkwardness appears to have already been avoided, as Matheus Cunha inherited the No 10 shirt following his arrival from Wolverhampton Wanderers last summer, while Rashford’s future at Old Trafford seemed uncertain.

According to reports, Rashford has no intention of pressuring United to return the number to him and will respect Cunha’s ownership of the shirt. Instead, he is expected to wear No 14 during the forthcoming campaign.

Rashford used the No 10 during his season-long loan at Barcelona and has found it available at United. He made his long-awaited return for the Red Devils in a pre-season match against AC Milan, wearing No 9, although that number is not expected to become permanent.

The game marked his first United appearance since December 2024. He entered the pitch after 60 minutes, being reunited with former manager Ruben Amorim, now at Milan. Despite falling out of favour under Amorim before his exit, Rashford has another opportunity to establish himself at the club where his senior career began.

Carrick has indicated that the attacker will be involved in the squad this season, though Rashford faces a challenge to regain a regular starting position and rebuild his relationship with the fans. United legend Wayne Rooney has remarked on this journey, emphasising the need for Rashford to demonstrate his commitment to the club.

Rooney stated, “It’s such a strange one with Marcus because we know he’s got the ability, he’s shown that. For me, has he got the hunger? Does he want to play for Man Utd?” He further noted the importance of working hard and maintaining positive body language to rebuild a connection with supporters.

Having previously worn United’s No 10 shirt for several years and established himself as one of the club’s most recognisable players, Rashford now appears prepared to embark on this new chapter of his Manchester United career with a different number.

This transition reflects the complex narratives within football, where identity and numbers overlap, and every decision can resonate deeply with supporters. Whether this marks a renaissance for Rashford or merely a stepping stone remains to be seen, but football, like life, thrives on moments of reinvention.
