Reform UK plans £50 billion welfare overhaul
Reform UK has announced a £50 billion reform of the welfare system, which includes the elimination of Personal Independence Payments (PIP) and mandates for sick individuals to return to work, should the party come to power, reports BritPanorama.
Robert Jenrick, the party’s treasury spokesman, described the initiative as the most significant welfare overhaul “in a generation.” The proposed changes aim to shift the current system, which he claims fails to support those in need, to a new framework focused on incentivising employment and reducing dependency on welfare.
The new approach would remove or decrease benefits for approximately 2.89 million individuals. The health portion of Universal Credit for working-age adults would also be abolished, leading to widespread implications for those currently supported under the existing system.
To replace PIP, individuals with severe and persistent disabilities would be eligible for a new health security allowance. Support for those classified as having lesser disabilities would transition to council-run disability support accounts, effectively limiting financial aid to only the most critically impacted.
Employers would be required to contribute to a new “Return to Work Cover” insurance scheme, which would support their employees financially during the first two years of extended sick leave. Jenrick indicated this structural change is intended to lower the overall welfare bill, which is projected to reach £333 billion this year.
The announcement follows the Reform party leader, Nigel Farage’s, victory in the Clacton by-election. Farage has faced scrutiny concerning a recent £5 million donation from cryptocurrency investor Christopher Harborne, calling into question the credibility of the party amid its ambitious reform proposals.
Reform UK plans to publish a detailed paper titled “Making Welfare Work,” expected to elaborate on the welfare changes and address previous concerns raised about their feasibility. Jenrick has claimed that the new reforms could potentially double the financial savings achieved by previous government strategies under Iain Duncan Smith, who developed Universal Credit.
Reaction from the political landscape has included criticism from opposition figures. Helen Whately, the shadow secretary of state for work and pensions, dismissed the proposals as an ill-conceived distraction from Farage’s controversial financial contributions and what she termed as his poor performance in recent elections.
Labour representatives responded to the party’s cost-saving assertions, calling them “fantasy economics” and underscoring their ongoing reform efforts aimed at practical improvements in welfare support. The Labour spokesperson highlighted their commitment to balancing welfare provisions more equitably, contrasting it with the perceived harshness of the proposed cuts.
