Sheffield Wednesday keen on Jamie Vardy’s return
An EFL club have publicly confirmed their interest in signing Jamie Vardy as the veteran striker considers his next move, reports BritPanorama.
David Storch, chairman of Sheffield Wednesday, has expressed enthusiasm for the possibility of bringing the 39-year-old back to Hillsborough, where he was released from their academy decades ago. Vardy is currently a free agent after departing Italian club Cremonese at the end of last season and is exploring several potential options for his next career step.
The interest from Wednesday carries a profound emotional weight given Vardy’s ties to the club. Growing up as an Owls supporter and spending formative years in their academy, his return would serve as a significant chapter in his career narrative.
Storch indicated the club’s commitment to finding a way to make the move financially feasible, acknowledging the restrictions they face. “At some point, I’ll be able to tell a story. This might not be the right time. But yeah, Jamie is somebody we would like to have in our club,” he told talkSPORT. He reaffirmed the club’s desire: “Let’s just say he’d be someone we’d be thrilled to have on the club, and unfortunately we do have these restrictions,” adding, “We’re trying to figure out how to get around the restrictions to put something in front of Jamie that would make sense for him.”
However, a potential agreement would likely necessitate Vardy accepting a considerable financial compromise, considering Wednesday’s operational constraints. Compounding this challenge is Vardy’s previous reluctance to return to his boyhood club. In a statement made in June, he remarked, “In short, no. It’s one of them things, I’ve always said that once I was let go then that chapter was kind of…shut.”
Concurrent interest has also emerged from West Ham United, who may be able to offer more lucrative terms should they decide to act on their interest. Yet, the prospect of returning to Hillsborough offers Vardy something unique: the opportunity to come full circle and don the colours of the club he cherished as a child.
With the transfer window still open, the situation remains fluid. Whether the emotional connection to Sheffield Wednesday will outweigh Vardy’s earlier reservations is a question yet to be answered, but the implications of his potential return could resonate strongly within the football community.
