LIV Golf stars Tyrrell Hatton, Tom McKibbin, and Adrian Meronk will participate in the British Masters at The Belfry from August 27 to 30, coinciding with LIV Golf’s Team Championship, which remains unconfirmed for cancellation, reports BritPanorama.
Sources indicate that LIV has informed its players of the Team Championship’s likely cancellation, as tickets are no longer available for purchase online. However, an official announcement from the tour is pending, following initial reports suggesting no preparations are ongoing at the designated venue, coupled with Fox TV’s removal of the tournament from its listings.
The Team Championship was set to feature a £29.6 million prize fund with 13 teams competing in Detroit, but indications now suggest LIV has halted the event. Next week’s tournament in Indiana appears to be the finale to a tumultuous season, raising questions about the league’s future.
Scott O’Neil, CEO of LIV Golf, confirmed that an undisclosed lead investor will ensure the competition continues into 2027, following the Saudi Public Investment Fund’s decision to withdraw financial support. O’Neil stated, “LIV Golf has an agreement in place with a lead investor… to anchor the transaction and play a key role in supporting the path forward for the League’s next era.”
He highlighted strong interest from additional potential investors, aiming to create a partnership model intended for long-term stability. This anticipated shift will reportedly make players majority equity holders in LIV Golf, marking a significant development for a major sports league. O’Neil expressed optimism about finalising terms soon, looking towards a September transaction.
The tour’s face, Bryson DeChambeau, affirmed his “100 per cent commitment” to LIV, despite expressing a desire to participate in PGA Tour events, stating, “My ultimate goal is to have golf course stadiums… with our teams having their own golf course as a stadium.”
As the situation continues to unfold, it serves as a reminder of how professional sport carries the weight of business uncertainties, particularly in a rapidly changing competitive landscape.
