Carneiro reignites feud with Mourinho over Netflix documentary
Chelsea’s former doctor Eva Carneiro has reignited her feud with Jose Mourinho after the current Real Madrid manager refused to apologise for his alleged verbal abuse of her in his new Netflix docu-series, reports BritPanorama.
Carneiro responded to the documentary’s revisiting of their 2015 touchline confrontation, during which Mourinho allegedly called her a “daughter of a w***e” in Portuguese.
“11 years on, and here we are reliving the worst. Hope they made some money,” Carneiro wrote on the social media platform.
Documentary footage captures him hurling a barrage of expletives, including “f*** off, man” and “f*** you, man”, towards Carneiro and physiotherapist Jon Fearn as they entered the field to treat Eden Hazard during a match against Swansea City.
Carneiro also took aim at former Chelsea captain John Terry, who voiced his support for Mourinho in the documentary. She posted: “We are bound by a medico-legal code of conduct. Genuinely it would be healthy for John Terry to learn the rules of the game. It’s been long enough mate.”
“So it is really simple. Referee Michael Oliver called us on twice, player Eden Hazard requested medical assistance, we then made eye contact from the sideline and he confirmed he needed medical assistance, twice. At that point my hands are bound as a medical professional.”
The flashpoint occurred during Chelsea’s opening Premier League fixture of the 2015/16 season against Swansea, when Hazard appeared to sustain an injury and went to ground, prompting Carneiro and physio Fearn to rush onto the pitch to provide treatment.
Their intervention enraged Mourinho, who believed the Belgian was not genuinely hurt, saying in the docu-series: “I’m not a doctor, but my eyes know when a player is injured, and they know when a player is not injured. I knew that he was not injured, but the doctors went to the pitch, and in that moment we were left with nine players.”
Under football’s rules, Hazard was required to temporarily leave the field after receiving on-pitch medical attention. With goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois already sent off earlier in the match, Chelsea were briefly left with just nine men.
In the documentary, Mourinho maintained that gender played no part in his reaction. He said: “For me, a lady doctor is the same as a man’s doctor. So, as always, I use my vocabulary when I’m not happy. There are words in moments where the tension is very, very high.”
Hazard, who spent two seasons under Mourinho at Stamford Bridge, downplayed the significance of the incident, describing it as “nothing special” but acknowledged that “with Jose everything is bigger.” Terry claimed there was a well-understood agreement among players and staff that medical personnel would only enter the pitch for visibly serious injuries.
“Medically, he would say unless it’s really, really bad, then they’re not coming on. That was the understanding for us as players; the medical staff, everyone bought into that,” the former captain explained.
Mourinho’s initial public response to the incident saw him label Carneiro as “impulsive and naive.” She was subsequently removed from first-team duties, and Carneiro pursued legal action, with a settlement eventually reached between the parties in a back corridor of the court.
This saga serves as a reminder of the tensions that can emerge at the intersection of sports and medical ethics, encapsulating a moment when a touchline altercation spiralled into a protracted dispute. Despite the years that have passed, the echoes of that fateful match still resonate strongly.
