Netflix’s new three-part documentary about Jose Mourinho is already getting football fans buzzing, and one detail in particular is absolutely brilliant. It turns out Pep Guardiola was actually willing to sit down for an interview about his famous rivalry with Mourinho. But there was a catch — and it’s a good one, reports BritPanorama.
Director Joe Pearlman, a multi-Emmy, BAFTA and Grammy-nominated filmmaker, told The Sun: “Yes, we did reach out to Pep, who agreed to do an interview but it was on the condition that Jose reached out to him in person.” As for whether Mourinho picked up the phone? Pearlman added: “You can imagine how that went down.”
Guardiola remains the most notable absentee from an otherwise packed roster of contributors. The documentary’s biggest bombshell is one that will haunt Manchester United supporters. It turns out Mourinho was in line to take over from Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford but opted to return to Stamford Bridge for a second spell with Chelsea instead.
Ferguson himself appears in the documentary, making the revelation all the more tantalising. For United fans, it’s the kind of “what if” that keeps you up at night — especially given the turbulent years the club has endured since Fergie’s retirement. Mourinho eventually managed United, but the circumstances at that time were very different.
The documentary boasts an impressive lineup of former players willing to share their experiences of working under Mourinho. Loyal figures like John Terry, Frank Lampard, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Samuel Eto’o, Marco Materazzi, and Javier Zanetti all feature, alongside less obvious names such as Sami Khedira. The legendary goalkeeper’s relationship with Mourinho fell apart during the Portuguese manager’s tenure at Real Madrid, where Casillas was dropped as first choice.
Despite their tumultuous history — including Mourinho suggesting that Casillas was leaking dressing-room secrets — the former goalkeeper appears to share his perspective. Through more than 20 sit-down interviews, Pearlman managed to delve beneath Mourinho’s carefully constructed public persona. He described Mourinho as “a genius in manipulation, in media control, in the presentation of an image” — and the best subject he’s ever worked with in that regard.
Pearlman first met Mourinho shortly after his sacking at Roma when the manager was in a vulnerable place, keen to define his legacy. The years spent filming spanned Mourinho’s time at Fenerbahçe and Benfica, a period that felt like genuine wilderness.
As for the timing of the release coinciding with Mourinho’s stunning return to Real Madrid? Pure coincidence, apparently. However, because the edit wasn’t quite finished, the team managed to weave it in — creating what Pearlman calls a perfect full-circle ending.
In many ways, this documentary serves not just as a chronicle of Mourinho’s career but also illustrates the delicate tensions that define football’s high-stakes realm.
