North Korea launches ballistic missile amid renewed military tensions
North Korea launched a ballistic missile toward the sea, marking its second weapons testing activity in less than a week, reports BritPanorama.
This latest series of missile launches likely serves as a protest against the upcoming Korea-U.S. military drills, which North Korea perceives as an invasion rehearsal. According to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, the missile was launched from the eastern coastal Wonsan area at around 6 a.m.
In response, South Korea’s military has heightened its surveillance posture and is actively sharing information regarding the launch with Washington and Tokyo. Japan’s Defense Ministry also reported observing a suspected ballistic missile launch from North Korea, although it confirmed that the missile did not enter Japan’s exclusive economic zone, indicating that it likely fell farther off the coast.
The missile launch arrives just two days after South Korea and the United States announced the commencement of their annual large-scale military drills, set to begin next week. The exercises, known as Ulchi Freedom Shield, will last for 11 days and involve approximately 18,000 South Korean soldiers.
North Korea has a history of responding to such joint military exercises with provocative weapons tests and aggressive rhetoric, viewing these drills as preparations for an offensive against the regime. While Pyongyang insists that its nuclear arsenal must be fortified in light of these threats, the U.S. and South Korea assert that their military training is defensive.
On August 6, both South Korea and the U.S., along with Japan, detected another missile launch from North Korea, marking the North’s first ballistic testing activity since late June. While North Korea did not immediately confirm this report, it typically issues statements detailing such tests the following day.
This surge in missile tests comes in the wake of the collapse of Kim Jong Un’s diplomatic negotiations with former U.S. President Donald Trump in 2019, a breakdown precipitated by disagreements over economic sanctions against North Korea.
