Liverpool warned of tough season ahead
Liverpool have been told to prepare for a “tough season” after losing several “top-class players” in the window, reports BritPanorama.
The Reds, under the management of former Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola, finished fifth last year, which marked the departure of previous manager Arne Slot. So far, Liverpool have won two and lost one in pre-season, with three more matches scheduled before their opening encounter against Newcastle United.
Former Liverpool forward Dean Saunders has expressed concern for the Reds, suggesting they must sign multiple players to strengthen their squad. Speaking to LiveFootballTickets, Saunders conveyed that this season is likely to present significant challenges for Liverpool.
“I think it’s going to be a tough season for Liverpool this year. They need a good bounce-back year under the new manager, which I think they are capable of, but it’ll be a tough ask for them to win the league,” he stated. He emphasized that the previous summer’s loss of important squad members was detrimental and pointed out that while some new players have arrived, they have yet to significantly influence the team’s performance.
Fans voiced frustrations with Liverpool’s style of play last season, often describing it as “sideways and backwards.” Saunders hopes that Iraola can reinstate the attacking football that has previously defined the club. He expects the team to adopt a quicker tempo under the new manager, adding, “If they can do that, they’ll be just fine.”
The club has signed promising youngsters Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Munoz this summer; however, Saunders insists that Liverpool requires experienced players to maintain their competitive edge. He remarked, “Being experienced and being actually good is not the same thing, and Liverpool need great players if they want to get back to lifting trophies this season.” The departure of key figures like Ibrahima Konate, Andy Robertson, and Mohamed Salah has amplified the need for reinforcements.
Addressing specific team needs, Saunders mentioned the urgent requirement for a right-back, particularly with Connor Bradley currently sidelined. He noted the void left by Trent Alexander-Arnold last season. Additionally, a high-caliber centre-back is imperative to complement Virgil Van Dijk. He advocates for tactical balance, suggesting another centre-back would ease the integration of young talents, such as Jacquet.
Furthermore, Liverpool needs to bolster its midfield, advocating for a seasoned Premier League player. With uncertainties surrounding Alexis Mac Allister, Saunders believes additional signings before the close of the transfer window are crucial for the club’s success this season.
