Joe Root unveils England squad for Pakistan series
Joe Root has wasted little time putting his own stamp back on the England Test side by turning to a host of familiar faces for the opening matches of the Pakistan series, reports BritPanorama.
The newly reappointed captain unveiled his first squad since replacing Ben Stokes, which carries a distinctly nostalgic feel, featuring several players from his previous tenure handed fresh opportunities. Dan Lawrence headlines the recall, as he returns to England’s Test setup for the first time in two years after an outstanding County Championship season.
Lawrence amassed five centuries during his prolific domestic campaign, convincing selectors that the 29-year-old deserves to revive an international career that had stalled. He is expected to slot into the middle order for the opening Test against Pakistan at Headingley.
England’s selection process has been complicated by the absence of Jacob Bethell, whose knee injury sidelines him until the Christmas Test series against South Africa. Bethell had established himself at No 3 before his setback, prompting Root and the selectors to seek a suitable replacement.
Jordan Cox has been entrusted with filling that vacancy after impressing during his debut summer. Originally introduced lower down the order, the Essex batter now faces a substantial challenge against a Pakistan attack led by Babar Azam’s side. Another surprise is the return of Ollie Pope, who has worked his way back into the fold despite registering just one century this season but averaging 54 in Division One.
Root’s squad also features trusted names in the bowling department. Brydon Carse returns after being the leading wicket-taker during the Ashes, while Essex seamer Sam Cook is included. However, Hampshire prospect Sonny Baker misses out after previously being in England’s plans.
The overall composition of the 16-man squad suggests the new leadership group is prioritising experience over experimentation as they attempt to rebuild following a disappointing period. “We have selected a squad for the first two Tests that balances rising talent with the experience needed against a quality Pakistan team,” said national selector Marcus North.
England has not clinched a Test series since 2024, beginning a new chapter under Root with high expectations despite Stokes’ retirement.
