Zinedine Zidane named new head coach of France national football team

Zinedine Zidane announced as France’s new head coach

Zinedine Zidane has been announced as France’s new head coach. The World Cup-winning midfielder and former Real Madrid manager has been presented this morning to the media, as he takes over from Didier Deschamps, reports BritPanorama.

Deschamps held the position for 14 years, leading the national team to two World Cup finals and securing victory in Russia in 2018, alongside a European Championship final. This achievement makes him the second individual to win the World Cup as both a player and a manager, following Franz Beckenbauer.

Zidane’s most recent match in charge of France resulted in a defeat against England, where his team lost 6-4 in the World Cup third-place play-off. He steps into his new role after a hiatus from management, having left Real Madrid for a second time in 2021. Zidane previously won the World Cup as a player in 1998 and the European Championship in 2000.

In his inaugural managerial role with the national team, he aims to lead France to European glory after their elimination in the 2024 semi-finals at the hands of Spain, who won 2-1. This marks a significant challenge for Zidane as he seeks to rejuvenate the squad.

During his impressive coaching career at Real Madrid, Zidane secured two La Liga titles, a Supercopa, two UEFA Super Cups, and two FIFA Club World Cups. His remarkable feat of winning the Champions League three times consecutively stands out as a major highlight of his tenure.

Upon assuming the role, Zidane expressed his pride, stating, “I’ve often said it: there’s nothing greater than the French national team. So it’s a joy and obviously a great source of pride to become the manager of this French national team.” Acknowledging Deschamps’ lengthy service, Zidane emphasised the responsibility that comes with the position and outlined his high ambitions for the team.

As he embarks on this new chapter, Zidane’s experience and track record will be crucial as he navigates the complexities of international football and harnesses the potential of a talented squad.

In a world where sport and national pride intersect, Zidane’s return serves as a reminder of the high stakes that come with the beautiful game, underlining how the narrative of football in France continues to evolve.
