George Russell cites serious issue affecting championship chances
George Russell has declared that a “serious issue” affecting his Mercedes is rendering his championship battle against teammate Kimi Antonelli “impossible” after qualifying more than half a second adrift at the Belgian Grand Prix, reports BritPanorama.
The British driver finished fourth in Saturday’s session at Spa-Francorchamps, posting a time 0.508 seconds slower than the 19-year-old Italian who secured his sixth pole position of the season.
Russell highlighted that the majority of his time loss occurred on the circuit’s long straights rather than through corners. “When I cross the line, you see you’re half a second down, it feels pretty rubbish,” he noted. “But when you realise more than 75 per cent of that’s coming from the power unit, you feel a bit better.”
This deficit leaves Russell trailing Antonelli by 25 points in the championship standings. The issue first became apparent at Silverstone, where initial assumptions pointed to faulty brakes as the cause of the performance gap.
After this theory was ruled out, attention shifted to Russell’s throttle technique, with the driver suspecting his own driving style might be the cause. “I convinced myself that it was something in me with the driving style,” he admitted. “Now, we’re very confident it’s not the driving style, and that there’s a serious issue at play here.”
Mercedes has systematically ruled out potential causes without success, leaving engineers perplexed by the persistent performance deficit. Russell described the situation as frustrating, detailing how he helplessly monitored his steering wheel display while at full throttle. “You’re watching on your steering wheel, just losing speed when you’re full gas on the straight. You feel powerless,” he explained.
The 36 hours leading up to qualifying were dedicated entirely to diagnosing the straight-line speed issue, sidelining setup work and tyre analysis. “My whole focus for the last 36 hours has been on straight-line speed,” Russell said, emphasizing the team’s commitment to resolving the matter.
Even on his final qualifying attempt, Russell’s woes continued, with an additional 0.15 seconds lost on the straights compared to earlier runs. Mercedes’ trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin confirmed that the team is still searching for answers regarding the performance discrepancies.
Russell’s struggles were compounded by poor deployment into the final chicane, which cost him vital grid positions. Shovlin stated the team is prioritizing these investigations due to the unexplained nature of the losses. Interestingly, McLaren has noted a similar issue with their Mercedes-powered cars, suggesting that the problem could be related to the power units rather than driving technique.
“When you overlay Antonelli and Russell, it looks like Lando and Oscar,” observed McLaren team principal Andrea Stella, indicating the potential for broader implications for the performance of Mercedes power units.
