Tuchel defends tactical decisions after England’s World Cup exit

Thomas Tuchel has firmly rejected suggestions that his tactical decisions cost England a place in the World Cup final, defending his approach during Friday’s press conference ahead of the third-place playoff against France, reports BritPanorama.

When questioned about Harry Kane operating in deeper positions after England took the lead, the German coach was dismissive. “In which situation did Harry play too deep? What do you mean? Like in the last 30 minutes?” Tuchel responded, asserting that the team defended as a unit. “We defend as a 10 and as 11, and if we are pushed back to a deep block, Harry defends in a deep block,” he added.

Tuchel conceded England “became too passive in the last 30 minutes” and struggled to retain possession, but maintained his substitutions were made to assist the team. Criticism intensified following England’s semi-final exit, where they squandered a lead that had put them within touching distance of their first final since 1966.

Anthony Gordon scored in the 55th minute to give a crucial advantage, but Argentina’s Lionel Messi orchestrated a comeback, providing the assist for Enzo Fernandez’s equaliser in the 85th minute and then crossing for Lautaro Martínez’s decisive header in stoppage time. As a result, Argentina progressed to face Spain in the final.

The scrutiny of Tuchel’s decisions intensified after he withdrew key players Gordon and Declan Rice, opting for a defensive shift that saw England field six recognised defenders by the end of the match. The conservative approach resulted in England managing just 12 per cent of possession between the lead and the equaliser, leaving them pinned in their half.

Despite this widespread criticism, the Football Association has expressed public support for Tuchel, who extended his contract through 2028 prior to the tournament. As fans reflect on a campaign that could have delivered more, the question remains: how well can a team defend if it cannot hold on to possession?
