Sir Garfield Sobers dies at 89

Barbadian cricketing legend Sir Garfield Sobers has passed away at the age of 89, reports BritPanorama.

Regarded as one of cricket’s greatest all-rounders, Sobers represented the West Indies for 20 years, from 1954 to 1974. His statistics reflect an illustrious career, with a batting average of 57.78 and 235 wickets at an average of 34.03.

One of his most memorable achievements occurred in 1968 at Glamorgan’s St Helen’s ground in Swansea, where Sobers became the first batsman in recorded history to hit six sixes in a single over. This feat was captured live on BBC cameras, sealing its place in sporting annals.

In 1958, Sobers made headlines again by scoring an unbeaten 365 against Pakistan at Sabina Park, breaking Len Hutton’s long-standing record of 364. Notably, Sobers achieved this feat without hitting a single six, a statistic that adds to the uniqueness of his legacy.

Sobers made his first-class debut for Barbados at just 16 years old, quickly establishing himself as a significant talent. His performance and consistency contributed to his selection for the national side, ultimately becoming a fixture in international cricket.

In recognition of his contributions, he was knighted in 1975, and in 1998, Barbados designated him as a National Hero, honouring his extraordinary impact both on and off the pitch.

His passing marks the end of an era in cricket, reminding us of how fleeting greatness can be and the enduring legacy left by icons like Sobers. For many, he represented not just cricketing prowess, but also an inspiring figure in sporting history.
