England’s World Cup journey ends against Argentina as Tuchel confirms future

England manager Thomas Tuchel has confirmed he will remain in charge through to Euro 2028 after watching his side’s World Cup dream come to a crushing end against Argentina on Wednesday night, reports BritPanorama.

The Three Lions appeared poised for their first World Cup final since 1966 after Anthony Gordon scored to give them an early lead in Atlanta. However, the match turned dramatically as Enzo Fernandez levelled the score before Lautaro Martinez netted the decisive goal, securing Argentina’s place in the final.

This defeat marked a bitter conclusion to what had been an impressive tournament for England, who had advanced to the semi-finals following knockout victories over DR Congo, Mexico, and Norway.

Despite the disappointment, Tuchel insisted there is no question over his future, with his focus already set on leading England into the European Championship, which will take place on home soil in 2028 across England, Scotland, Wales, and the Republic of Ireland. He had signed a contract extension earlier this year, ensuring his role until the tournament.

When asked about his plans following the World Cup exit, Tuchel stated, “We keep on going with the contract until the home Euros. I’m looking forward to that even though right now it’s difficult to look that far ahead.”

As attention now shifts to Saturday’s third-place play-off against France in Miami, a fixture Tuchel acknowledged neither side wanted to be part of, he maintained that reaching another World Cup semi-final warrants recognition. “We have to wait for four years to go again at another World Cup,” he remarked.

Kane, England’s captain, expressed his frustration at losing control after taking the lead and attributed the defeat to a shift in tactics that saw his side become overly defensive. “I’m gutted,” he revealed. “Once we went 1-0 up we seemed to just try and hold on, which at this level is just not enough.”

With a clear sense of the team’s effort, Kane added, “We worked so hard to be here. The lads have given every last bit of running, sweat, blood, tears, whatever it is, so to fall short like today is just gutting.”

Although Ireland was left devastated by yet another near miss on the grand stage, Kane believes England are closing in on breaking a long-standing drought in major tournament success. “We just need to find that missing piece,” he concluded. This sentiment underscores the ongoing journey of the England side, with hopes for future triumphs now resting on an upcoming European Championship on home soil.
