Sir Nick Faldo critiques Bryson DeChambeau’s links golf strategy ahead of The Open

Sir Nick Faldo has openly criticized Bryson DeChambeau’s approach to links golf as the American prepares for The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, reports BritPanorama.

The three-time Open winner expressed his disapproval of DeChambeau’s aggressive tactics, declaring on Sky Sports: “I’d say it to his face, DeChambeau has zero clue of strategy.”

Faldo’s bewilderment stems from the American’s mindset during last year’s tournament in Northern Ireland, where DeChambeau stated, “I’m going to go out and attack the links.” Faldo responded, arguing, “I’ve never attacked a links. You thread it, don’t you? You feed it down the fairway.”

Entering Southport, DeChambeau faces mounting pressure after a disappointing performance in this year’s majors, failing to make the cut in all three events. In contrast, his outings on the LIV Golf circuit have seen him clinch two victories and secure three top-three finishes, raising questions about how LIV players adapt—or struggle—when returning to traditional majors.

Faldo attributed DeChambeau’s difficulties to a lack of understanding of links golf strategy. He highlighted the importance of anticipating pin positions and playing to the course’s natural contours. “You look at humps and bumps. If I send it over and feed it, it nudges back into play,” he explained, stressing the need for finesse instead of brute force.

The Englishman also noted the strategic decisions players must make, such as opting for a one iron or three wood to gain roll on downslopes without the risks associated with hitting drivers down narrow fairways. Despite his recent struggles, DeChambeau remains optimistic, bringing new 3D-printed irons to Royal Birkdale in hopes of reviving his form. “This is a tough golf course; I like it,” he stated, pointing to the course’s demands on various aspects of the game.

As DeChambeau contemplates his strategies against the backdrop of Faldo’s critical insights, the interplay of tradition and modern innovation within golf continues to captivate fans and analysts alike. The upcoming competition serves as a reminder of the intricate balance required to succeed in the sport, especially on the challenging links courses that have defined the game for generations.
