Manchester United eye Youri Tielemans as midfield reinforcement

Manchester United have turned their attention to Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans after missing out on several of their top transfer targets this summer, reports BritPanorama.

The Red Devils are in advanced talks over a move for the Belgium international as they step up plans to reshape their midfield ahead of the new campaign.

United had identified younger options as priorities earlier in the window but have been forced to look elsewhere after failing to land both Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes. Anderson is off to Manchester City, while Fernandes has joined Tottenham from West Ham.

A move for Tielemans would represent a significant change in recruitment strategy, with the club having previously focused on signing players between the ages of 22 and 26. Instead, they are now pursuing the vast experience of the 29-year-old, who has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most accomplished midfielders. The Red Devils have been accelerating their plans ahead of the new campaign.

United initially dismissed reports last week claiming they had reached an agreement to sign Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos in a deal worth £48million plus a further £2 million in add-ons. However, less than 24 hours later, it emerged the club had in fact struck an agreement on terms matching those figures. Attention has now switched to strengthening the centre of midfield following Casemiro’s departure, with further reinforcements viewed as a priority.

United’s plans have also been complicated by a serious injury suffered by Manuel Ugarte. The Uruguay international had been expected to leave Old Trafford this summer but is now facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after sustaining a long-term injury. Tielemans has emerged as an attractive option thanks to his Premier League pedigree and wealth of top-level experience.

The Belgian international joined Aston Villa on a free transfer from Leicester City in 2023 and has become an important figure under Unai Emery. He featured 35 times in all competitions last season and has amassed almost 250 Premier League appearances during his time in England. Tielemans also captains Belgium and has earned 90 international caps, although his World Cup campaign came to a disappointing end after his country were beaten by Spain in the quarter-finals.

Villa, meanwhile, could face a difficult decision because of their own injury problems. Amadou Onana suffered a serious knee injury during the World Cup, leaving Emery short of options in central midfield should Tielemans depart before the transfer window closes.

United are pursuing a significant overhaul as they seek a first league title since 2013. Tielemans’ potential signing marks a pivotal moment, with the Red Devils hopeful he can turn them into a force once more.

As the transfer window edges toward its conclusion, the spotlight remains firmly on Manchester United’s capacity to reshape their squad and reclaim their competitive edge in the Premier League, in a landscape where experience can often prove invaluable.
