Thomas Tuchel seeks clarity from FIFA over Quansah suspension
Thomas Tuchel has admitted England are still waiting for answers from FIFA after Jarell Quansah’s controversial World Cup suspension was extended ahead of Saturday’s quarter-final against Norway, reports BritPanorama.
The Three Lions boss expressed his frustration, noting that neither he nor his coaching staff have received any explanation regarding the two-match ban imposed on the Liverpool defender following his red card against Mexico.
England enters the knockout match in Miami facing defensive uncertainties, as Quansah’s absence leaves Tuchel with reduced options at right-back. The 23-year-old was sent off during England’s dramatic last-16 win after a dangerous challenge on Mexico defender Jesus Gallardo.
Initially, the referee allowed play to continue, only for VAR to intervene and lead to Quansah’s dismissal upon review. Although England contemplated contesting the ruling, FIFA later confirmed that Quansah would serve a two-match suspension rather than the standard one-game ban. This decision has renewed debate about officiating standards, particularly as Tuchel had openly critiqued the referee’s decisions in the match, including a contentious penalty awarded against Harry Kane.
When queried if his comments could have influenced the additional suspension, Tuchel dismissed the notion, stating that England remains uninformed about the rationale behind the ruling. The controversy surrounding Quansah’s suspension has also been intensified by another high-profile disciplinary case earlier in the tournament involving USA forward Folarin Balogun, whose suspension was lifted after President Donald Trump intervened with FIFA.
As preparations continue for the pivotal match against Norway, Tuchel remains steadfast in his belief that his squad has embraced an aggressive style of play aimed at maximizing their performance on the field. “I try to support the players and build a platform for them to show their qualities,” Tuchel emphasized.
