A Paraguayan senator has threatened to pursue legal action against Kylian Mbappe, accusing the France captain of “gender-based violence” after he branded her “despicable” in response to her racist social media tirade, reports BritPanorama.
Celeste Amarilla, who represents Paraguay’s Liberal Radical Party, issued the warning on Tuesday following a bitter public row that erupted after France knocked Paraguay out of the World Cup with a 1-0 victory on Saturday.
The controversy ignited after the match, during which Amarilla posted offensive remarks targeting Mbappe’s heritage. Although she later removed the comments amid widespread condemnation, the fallout continued as Mbappe responded to her tirade.
Following the encounter, Mbappe issued a scathing statement on social media, labelling Amarilla’s behavior as “brazen racism.” He stressed that her actions overshadowed the achievements of Paraguay’s national team, which had reached the knockout stages of the tournament.
He asserted, “You do not represent Paraguay, that country which has sweated passion and honour throughout the competition,” adding that the world had largely forgotten the efforts of the players due to her recklessness.
Amarilla demanded that Mbappe retract his comments and issue an apology, dubbing his remarks as gender-based violence. She explained her own comments as impulsive, attributing her emotions to her “mixed-race blood” boiling.
The French Football Federation condemned Amarilla’s remarks as utterly abhorrent and has initiated legal proceedings. Additionally, Paraguay’s government distanced itself from her statements as the backlash intensified. Amarilla warned the football star not to underestimate her influence, citing a high-profile incident involving Ronaldinho’s detention in Paraguay.
In a sporting world where passions run high, this incident encapsulates how words can transcend the field and incite serious consequences, reminding us of the fine line between sportsmanship and personal responsibility.
