Tuchel plans significant tactical shift as England prepares for World Cup clash with DR Congo

Tuchel poised to change England’s World Cup strategy against DR Congo

Thomas Tuchel is preparing to tear up England’s World Cup routine if the Three Lions overcome DR Congo and reach the last 16, reports BritPanorama.

The England manager has opted to keep his squad based in Kansas City throughout the tournament, preferring to return to a familiar environment after each match. However, this approach is set to change should England progress to a potential last-16 showdown with either Mexico or Ecuador at the iconic Azteca Stadium.

If England advances, Tuchel plans to take his players to Mexico City 48 hours before kick-off instead of the day before as they have done throughout the competition. This earlier arrival would allow England to train at altitude before facing one of the tournament’s significant challenges.

Mexico City sits over 2,200 metres above sea level, presenting a unique physical test for visiting teams. England have been preparing for these conditions at their Kansas City training base, where hyperbaric chambers have been installed to assist recovery and help players adapt.

Tuchel has previously emphasized the importance of returning to the same base after matches rather than continuously moving between cities. The squad has settled into what has been described as an “English-style” hotel, complete with recreational facilities, including a basketball court. This continuity has been seen as crucial to England’s preparations throughout the tournament.

If England defeats DR Congo, they are expected to fly to Mexico City on Friday ahead of a potential last-16 clash on Sunday evening local time. The Azteca Stadium holds painful memories for England supporters, notably the 1986 World Cup when Sir Bobby Robson’s team was eliminated by Argentina following Diego Maradona’s infamous “Hand of God” goal.

Tuchel will hope England can craft a very different narrative if they return to the famous stadium almost four decades later. Should England triumph over either Mexico or Ecuador, they would return to Kansas City before travelling once again for a potential quarter-final in Miami.

For the time being, Tuchel’s focus remains firmly on Wednesday’s meeting with DR Congo. The England manager is expected to include Djed Spence in the starting line-up following Jarell Quansah’s ankle injury sustained during the 2-0 victory over Panama. Quansah had been filling in at right-back after Reece James was ruled out with a hamstring issue, leaving Tuchel with limited options in that position. The manager’s other vital decision revolves around the left wing, where Marcus Rashford seems poised to retain his spot ahead of Anthony Gordon.

As Tuchel navigates the complexities of tournament football, the stakes rise and the strategies evolve. In this World Cup dance, each decision carries weight, a reminder that football is as much about adaptability as it is about talent.
