Tuchel involved in exchange with Pickford during World Cup match
Thomas Tuchel appeared to be involved in a heated exchange with Jordan Pickford during England’s 4-2 World Cup win against Croatia after the goalkeeper seemingly failed to follow his manager’s instructions, reports BritPanorama.
The incident occurred shortly after Harry Kane had put England ahead from the penalty spot in Dallas, though television cameras did not capture the conversation between the pair.
Fox Sports reporter Geoff Shreeves, who was pitchside at the Dallas Stadium, claimed Tuchel shouted towards his goalkeeper: “Do as I told you!” Shreeves also suggested Pickford responded to the England boss after appearing to receive criticism for distributing the ball in the wrong direction.
England had just taken the lead through Kane, who converted at the second attempt after referee Clement Turpin ordered a retake of his penalty. The striker had initially seen his effort saved by Dominik Livakovic, but VAR deemed the Croatia goalkeeper had moved off his line too early. Kane made no mistake from the second attempt, though England’s advantage proved short-lived as Martin Baturina curled home a superb equaliser.
The Three Lions regained the lead when Kane headed in from Declan Rice’s corner, only for Petar Musa to level matters again in first-half stoppage time. Tuchel cut a frustrated figure on the touchline throughout a chaotic opening 45 minutes and kept his players in the dressing room longer than Croatia during the interval.
England’s assistant manager Anthony Barry later admitted the team’s display had been disjointed and lacking clarity. “I think a lot of nervous energy early on,” Barry told ITV. “Maybe that should be accepted, and maybe expected in the opening game of a World Cup. From there, then we made some decisions where the energy was not free in our mind, playing long when we should play short, playing short when we should play long, really not playing through the gaps so not allowing us to accelerate our game the way we wanted to.”
“Then you think the penalty would free us up, allow us to play more like us, look more like ourselves, but again we fall back into some fearful patterns,” he further noted, highlighting the team’s reliance on set pieces.
Whatever was said in the dressing room at halftime appeared to have the desired effect. England needed less than two minutes after the restart to move back in front, with Jude Bellingham embarking on a surging run before producing a composed finish. Tuchel’s side ultimately recovered from their difficult first-half display to begin their World Cup campaign with victory and strengthen their position in Group L, which also contains Ghana and Panama.
