Kieran McKenna steps down as Ipswich Town head coach

Kieran McKenna has opted to leave his position as Ipswich Town head coach and step away from football entirely, reports BritPanorama.

The 40-year-old manager’s resignation comes despite being the primary candidate for the head coach position at Fulham. McKenna recently led Ipswich back to the Premier League after a successful season, marking a notable turnaround for the club following its relegation.

His tenure at Portman Road began in December 2021, and his departure concludes a transformative period for the club. Ipswich has arranged financial protections should McKenna decide to return to management within the next year.

As part of the terms following his resignation, Ipswich would be entitled to compensation reflecting the remaining length of McKenna’s contract, currently valued at approximately £7 million. This comes after reports that Fulham were contemplating activating an £8 million release clause to secure his services.

In a statement addressing his decision, McKenna expressed mixed emotions, stating: “It is with a mixture of gratitude, pride, sadness and contentment that I have decided to step down from the honour of managing this historic football club. When you have the connection that we have built at this club, there is never a good time to say goodbye.” He noted his pride in the accomplishments achieved during his tenure, including back-to-back promotions to the Premier League.

McKenna’s journey at Ipswich began as he took over a club struggling in mid-table of the third tier shortly after an embarrassing FA Cup exit. Under his guidance, Ipswich returned to the top flight, ending a 22-year absence from the elite division.

His decision to resign comes amid inquiries from various clubs, including Chelsea, Manchester United, and Brighton, for his services in the past season; however, he chose to remain loyal to Ipswich by signing a lucrative four-year deal.

As football continues to shift beneath its most storied clubs, McKenna’s departure from Ipswich serves as a reminder of the personal tides that often accompany professional journeys in the sport. The paths taken by managers can redefine clubs, but the human stories they leave behind often linger long after the final whistle has blown.
