Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson dropped from England squad for second Test against New Zealand

Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson have been omitted from England’s squad for the second Test against New Zealand following their involvement in a nightclub incident last week, reports BritPanorama.

The pair violated team rules by exceeding a midnight curfew while celebrating England’s 115-run victory at Lord’s last Sunday.

Their exclusion comes as the ECB continues to investigate the breach of team protocols, with the matter also referred to the independent Cricket Regulator. Training for the second Test is scheduled to commence at the Kia Oval on Sunday.

Stokes, aged 35, appears to be in a standoff with cricket’s governing body over the affair. Speculation that he might address the situation via social media on Tuesday did not materialise. Former England captain Michael Vaughan, who led the team between 2003 and 2008, has expressed support for Stokes to retain the captaincy despite the incident.

Writing in The Telegraph, Vaughan stated that while Stokes breached curfew, it should not be grounds for losing his position as captain. “Yes, Ben Stokes broke a curfew. Yes, he made a mistake. But is that a sacking offence as England’s Test captain? I do not think so,” he said. Vaughan noted Stokes has built considerable goodwill through his performances as both captain and all-rounder.

Despite endorsing Stokes’ continuation in the leadership role, Vaughan voiced concerns regarding Stokes’ conduct in recent months, referencing behaviours during the unsuccessful Ashes series in Australia. He highlighted troubling examples, including aggressive interactions following interviews and a noticeable absence from commemorative events.

The ongoing investigation is focused on events that unfolded after several Saracens rugby players were seen socialising with members of the England cricket team the same evening. A confrontation reportedly escalated into a physical altercation, during which a member of ECB security was struck. Both Stokes and Atkinson remain under scrutiny amid the inquiry.

The Saracens rugby club has initiated its investigation to ascertain the complete circumstances surrounding the incident. The ECB was keen to resolve the matter before the Women’s T20 World Cup at Edgbaston on Friday, which features England hosting Sri Lanka.

In the unpredictable world of sports, where the blurred lines between personal conduct and professional responsibility often lead to wider implications, this incident is a stark reminder of the pressures athletes face in maintaining not only performance but also decorum under public scrutiny.
