Mayo's historic win breaks 'curse' and resonates with fans and public figures alike

Victory for Mayo ends long-standing curse

A historic moment unfolded for County Mayo as their football team clinched a championship victory on Sunday, ending a much-debated “curse” that had lingered for decades, reports BritPanorama.

The win brought an emotional release to a team and its supporters, with grown men weeping in the stands of Croke Park Stadium, which has a capacity of 82,000. Fans were shown celebrating and expressing their relief, some visibly moved as they commemorated the moment.

Among the supporters, notable figures such as musician Carney and the Gallagher brothers from Oasis expressed their congratulations. Carney, who recently explored his heritage in the village of his grandparents during a state visit, shared his joy on social media. “The curse is broken,” he tweeted, referencing a local superstition surrounding Mayo’s past failures.

This “curse” had haunted the team, akin to similar myths associated with the Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs in U.S. baseball. It stemmed from a 1951 homecoming parade that purportedly disrupted a funeral, leading to the priest’s grim declaration that Mayo would not win again as long as any of that victorious team were alive. The last member of the 1951 All-Ireland-winning side passed away in 2021, shortly after Mayo faced its 11th consecutive final defeat.

The victory resonated through the fans and players alike. Mayo’s midfielder Matthew Ruane described an emotional encounter with social media highlights, stating, “I genuinely broke down just looking at them. It half hit home for the first time. Genuinely, it’s amazing.”

This triumph marks a notable shift in the narrative surrounding Mayo football, and the significance of such an event for the community and its supporters cannot be overstated.
