Chelsea in talks to sign Danny Welbeck from Brighton
Chelsea are in advanced discussions to bring Brighton striker Danny Welbeck to Stamford Bridge, with growing confidence on both sides that an agreement can be struck, reports BritPanorama.
The 35-year-old forward, who has previously played for Arsenal and Manchester United, is entering the final year of his contract at the Amex Stadium. Brighton is understood to be open to allowing his departure for the right fee.
Initial conversations involving the two clubs, Welbeck, and his representatives have yielded positive feedback, leading to suggestions within Chelsea that the move is progressing well.
Welbeck’s performance last season, with 13 goals from 37 Premier League matches, has captured the attention of Chelsea’s new manager Xabi Alonso, who values the striker’s experience and leadership qualities alongside his scoring ability. Notably, he netted twice in Brighton’s 3-1 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
This potential transfer signifies a shift in Chelsea’s recruitment approach, which had previously prioritized younger, high-potential players over seasoned performers. With goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, aged 28, currently the oldest member of the first-team squad, Alonso’s desire for a more experienced dressing room has received endorsement from the club’s leadership.
At present, Chelsea have five senior strikers: Joao Pedro, Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha, and Marc Guiu. Pedro is considered the club’s first-choice forward after an impressive debut season, while Delap, despite a challenging first year after transferring from Ipswich, is anticipated to be given another season to develop.
If Welbeck’s transfer proceeds, Chelsea is likely to offload or loan out several forwards to streamline the squad ahead of the new campaign.
The club has already been active this summer, completing a significant £117 million deal for Morgan Rogers, who has now become the most expensive British footballer. Additionally, they agreed on a fee exceeding £52 million for Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix, with further spending anticipated before the transfer window closes.
Welbeck, capped 42 times by England, joined Brighton in 2020 and recently signed a 12-month contract extension in March, which keeps him at the club until the end of the 2026-27 season.
