Justin Thomas faces challenging conditions at The Memorial Tournament
Justin Thomas faced what he deemed the most challenging round of his golfing career at The Memorial Tournament on Friday, posting a three-over par 75 at Muirfield Village, thus making it to the weekend just at the cut line, reports BritPanorama.
The round was notably difficult, with gusty winds reaching speeds of 20 to 25 miles per hour, frequently altering direction and leaving players uncertain on how to approach shots, particularly over water hazards. The average score for the day rose above 74, indicating the overall struggle faced by the field.
Things took an unusual turn when Thomas’s ball struck Rory McIlroy’s coin marker on the green for the second consecutive day. “It’s funny, it happened yesterday,” Thomas reflected. “My ball was directly in front of his coin yesterday,” he recounted, emphasizing the bizarre nature of the sequence.
Thomas had to mark and move his ball while observing McIlroy miss a putt, then moved his own marker back only to encounter the same situation again. “It will never happen again in my career. It was nuts,” he added, comparing the incident to a similar one involving Will Zalatoris a few years prior.
Upon completing their rounds, Thomas and McIlroy opted for a hug rather than the customary handshake. “It was a mutual hug,” Thomas noted. “We just looked at each other and I think we both, we were like, we need a hug.” Both players battled the difficult conditions, with McIlroy finishing with a score of 74.
Reflecting on the day, Thomas took to social media to commend J.T. Poston’s impressive seven-under 65, expressing disbelief at the contrast between their performances. “I don’t think I can put into words how good J.T. Poston’s round was today,” he wrote on X. “I’m out there trying to figure out where and how I can make ONE birdie, let alone shooting -7!” This highlights the remarkable gap, as the next best score was a 69, a full four shots off the pace.
The challenges of Muirfield Village served as a testament to the formidable nature of the tournament this year, illustrating how even top players can find themselves in a tough spot when conditions turn against them.
