Aryna Sabalenka stunned at French Open by Diana Shnaider
Aryna Sabalenka is out of the French Open in a massive upset after losing to Diana Shnaider. In a tournament that has seen seismic shocks across both the men’s and women’s draws, the world number one is the next one to fall, losing the last set without winning a single game, reports BritPanorama.
Shnaider mounted a comeback from a set and a double break deficit to upset the world number one 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 during the contest. Sabalenka left the court immediately after her loss, marking the end of her title defence.
Initially, the world number one found her rhythm in the tough, windy conditions, racing to a 5-1 advantage before losing her serve. After winning the first set, she celebrated with a fist pump, but the momentum shifted dramatically. Shnaider showed resilience in the second set, breaking Sabalenka and winning 7-5, which set the stage for a decisive third set.
In the final set, the 25th-ranked Shnaider dominated, winning 6-0 to advance to her first-ever major semi-final. Speaking afterwards, Shnaider expressed her joy, saying, “Honestly, I am speechless. Super happy. Obviously, today tough conditions with the wind.” She noted the nerves she felt playing on such a significant stage for the first time.
Reflecting on the match, Shnaider stated, “I feel like I was trying to focus point by point. Not thinking about the score. She is the world number one, so I just trying to do my best. I just had to fight for every point.” She emphasized her transformation in the third set, adding, “I finally found my rhythm and how to play,” calling it a “super special win.”
Shnaider’s semi-final will be against Maja Chwalinska, another player reaching her first grand slam semi-final as a qualifier. This adds a unique layer of excitement to the tournament, showcasing emerging talents against established champions. The narrative of both players illustrates the unpredictable nature of the sport, and as they prepare for their showdown, the anticipation is palpable.
