Pep Guardiola eyes England management after Manchester City departure

Pep Guardiola has apparently set his sights on the England job after bringing the curtain down on his glittering Manchester City reign, reports BritPanorama.

The Spaniard’s decade-long spell at the Etihad came to an emotional end this week, with Guardiola leaving as one of the most decorated managers in football history, having delivered 17 major trophies to the club.

As speculation swirls around what comes next for the 55-year-old, there are fresh claims that international management could eventually tempt him away from retirement. Reports suggest that Guardiola has privately indicated to friends that leading England would appeal to him in the future.

This notion surfaced during a discussion on Sky Sports, where Daily Mail journalist Jack Gaughan mentioned that the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss has spoken positively about the prospect of taking charge of the Three Lions. “I don’t think we’ll see him in club management, although he is prone to changing his mind quite hastily,” Gaughan noted.

Guardiola departs City having transformed the club into a dominant force in modern football, notably winning six Premier League titles, including an unprecedented four consecutive championships. His success story extends beyond England, with multiple league titles accrued during his stints at both Barcelona and Bayern Munich, alongside three Champions League trophies.

However, a notable gap in his career remains: he has never managed at international level and has yet to experience the unique pressures of a World Cup or European Championship campaign. The potential to chase World Cup glory has often been cited as one of the few ambitions left for a coach who has already conquered club football.

Any move towards taking charge of England, however, appears unlikely in the immediate future. Current Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel remains firmly in position after agreeing fresh terms earlier this year, with his contract believed to extend until the conclusion of Euro 2028. England’s focus is now on this summer’s World Cup, where Tuchel’s side will be aiming to end a 60-year wait for major international silverware.

Meanwhile, Manchester City is already preparing for life after Guardiola, with former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca emerging as the leading candidate to succeed the Spaniard, signalling a potential new era at the Etihad.

As the next chapter of Guardiola’s career looms on the horizon, one can’t help but consider the journey that lies ahead — after all, the lure of national duty has captivated many a coach, promising both challenge and reward.
