Ballon d'Or ceremony to debut in London for 70th anniversary of prestigious award

London to host the Ballon d’Or ceremony for the first time

In a significant move for the London sporting landscape, the city will host the Ballon d’Or ceremony for the first time as the award marks its 70th anniversary, reports BritPanorama.

The Ballon d’Or is widely regarded as the most prestigious award in world football, established by the France Football magazine in 1956. UEFA has confirmed the decision to hold the ceremony in the UK capital as a tribute to Sir Stanley Matthews, the inaugural winner of the award seven decades ago.

UEFA stated, “By staging its 70th edition in the capital of England and the United Kingdom, the Ballon d’Or continues its expansion and further strengthens its status as a globally prestigious brand.” The precise venue for the ceremony remains unspecified, though it has traditionally taken place in Paris.

Football’s elite will converge on London for the occasion. This year, Paris Saint-Germain winger Ousmane Dembélé and FC Barcelona’s Aitana Bonmatí were the respective winners of the men’s and women’s awards. England captain Harry Kane is considered the frontrunner for this year’s prestigious accolade after a remarkable season with Bayern Munich, where he scored 36 goals in 31 Bundesliga matches and tallied another 14 in the Champions League.

Kane’s exemplary performance includes a total of 61 goals this season, positioning him as England’s key player as the team heads into the World Cup with hopes of breaking a 60-year trophy drought. Dembélé, meanwhile, is a credible competitor for the award, having the potential to become the first player to win back-to-back titles since Lionel Messi.

Bookmakers have placed Arsenal’s Declan Rice as the third favourite for the award, a notable position despite not clinching the Premier League Player of the Year trophy. His contributions helped Arsenal secure their first league title in 22 years, alongside a victory in the Europa Conference League with West Ham.

The Ballon d’Or continues to be a touchstone in football, and its move to London reflects a gesture towards the historical significance of British contributions to the sport. As the event approaches, the excitement around the celebrations and who will take centre stage this year will only intensify, resonating far beyond the pitch.
