Peter Murrell pleads guilty to embezzling over £400,000 from SNP

Peter Murrell, the former chief executive of the Scottish National Party (SNP) and ex-husband of Nicola Sturgeon, has been sentenced after pleading guilty to embezzling more than £400,000 from the party, reports BritPanorama.

The 61-year-old appeared at the High Court in Edinburgh, facing multiple charges associated with diverting party funds between August 12, 2010, and January 13, 2023. He admitted to embezzling a total of £400,310.65, with some charges being withdrawn before his plea.

Murrell displayed no emotional reaction as he was taken into custody following his admission of guilt. The presiding judge, Lord Young, characterised his actions as a “gross breach of trust.” Sentencing is scheduled for June 2.

The prosecution revealed that Murrell had misappropriated funds to purchase luxury items, including cars and a motorhome. Evidence presented in court indicated that he had used cash meant for political purposes to secure goods from high-end brands while Sturgeon was serving as First Minister.

Specific allegations outlined a £125,000 motorhome bought from an English firm, which he had transported to near his mother’s home in Dunfermline. To mask the illegitimacy of the purchases, Murrell was accused of fabricating sales documents linking these transactions to party expenses.

This case is part of a broader investigation by Police Scotland known as Operation Branchform, which has focused on the disappearance of £660,000 in donations made to the SNP by independence supporters. The lengthy inquiry involved extensive investigations across Europe and culminated in police raids on Murrell and Sturgeon’s home as well as SNP headquarters in Edinburgh.

While Sturgeon and former party treasurer Colin Beattie were both arrested in relation to the investigation, they were released without charges. Following the scandal, Sturgeon announced her decision to end her marriage to Murrell in early January 2024, stating they had been separated for some time.

Assistant Chief Constable Stuart Houston of Police Scotland commented on the case, calling it “one of the most high-profile investigations in recent times.” He emphasised the significance of the evidence gathered and the professional dedication of the investigative team, highlighting Murrell’s disregard for the public trust placed in him during his tenure.

Murrell, who had assumed his role in the party for many years, will now face legal consequences for his actions, marking a significant chapter in the scrutiny of SNP’s financial management.

The implications of this case extend beyond individual culpability; they pose questions regarding governance and accountability within political institutions in Scotland.
